Illinois Real Estate Broker Licenses: Frequently Asked Questions

How can I learn more about what a real estate career really offers?
Visit the career information section of our Web site for a helpful overview of the exciting world of real estate. Talking to successful professionals is another great way to learn more about being a real estate agent on a daily basis. Check out our free articles to help you decide if a real estate career is right for you!

What are the requirements to get a broker license?
You must complete a 120-hour, Real Estate transactions course. A candidate can't accrue an additional 45-class hour of credit by repeating the Real Estate Transactions course. Of those 120 hours, you must complete 75 class hours of broker courses at a real estate school approved by the DPR. If you are a licensed Illinois real estate salesperson it is presumed you have already completed the 45 hour Real Estate Transactions course and only need the 75 hours of broker courses.

Do I need a college degree to get my real estate license?
No, the only education required is a state-approved prelicense course. For a mere fraction of the cost of an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, you could earn a six-figure income and have a flexible schedule! For more details on state licensing requirements, click here.

Should I get any additional books on the subject?
Sure, reading as much as you can about succeeding as a real estate agent is a wise strategy. ProSchools offers an array of books, including Real Estate Field Manual, On Track to Success in 30 Days, Real Estate Prospecting, and many more in our online bookstore.

Do Illinois real estate licensees have continuing education requirements?
Yes. Salespersons and brokers must complete 12 hours of continuing education every two years.

Does Illinois offer license Reciprocity with any other state?
Yes. The current list of states having reciprocity with Illinois appears on the DFP web site. However, even those out-of-state licensees who qualify for reciprocity still must pass a test on Illinois specific real estate brokerage laws and obtain an Illinois license before practicing in Illinois.
